I think I remember hearing that Nolan wanted to recast Heath but he also almost never wanted to make The Dark Knight Rises after he died.

@richman Well I also heard WB wanted the Riddler as the villain for Rises (with Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp being considered) but Nolan didn't want to use a character similar to the Joker which was why he went with Bane instead.

@samkresil the recast thing was just online speculation. Nolan has always been very protective of Ledger’s performance. He even stopped the Todd Phillips Joker movie from having him scar himself because he felt that was Ledger’s trademark.

@samkresil I may be wrong, but I think Joker was meant to be the main villain of Rises. So after Heath’s passing, he probably wasn’t sure where to go from there.
