Before the outbreak, he was a U.S. Army Sergeant and a sports coach. Following the death of Tyreese, Abraham later takes on the role of Rick Grimes' right-hand man. Abraham's main role in the group is as a tactical advisor and pragmatist for Rick in keeping the group members safe from any type of threat. He also starts off as a troubled man with a borderline uncontrollable thirst for violence, especially after meeting Rick Grimes and clashing with him ideologically. After breaking down emotional barriers with the latter and growing closer to the group, however, Abraham only engages in violence with those who threaten his friends and community. Abraham is one of the few survivors who lost his entire family. For a while, this was a devastating loss that motivated many of Abraham's actions, including his frequent rage-fueled outbursts, until he is able to come to terms with his loss thanks to the support of his friends, comrades and, especially, Rosita. In turn, this helps Abraham become more emotionally intelligent and open about his feelings, all while remaining a strong and fierce protector of the group.
