Thirty years after sacrificing himself to destroy the Sun-Eater and redeem himself from Parallax's corruption, Hal Jordan mysteriously returns to life—young again, but with no idea why. His old ring refuses to return to him. Three years earlier, it had left Oa on its own and chosen John Stewart, making him Earth's first Green Lantern since Hal's fall. The Guardians bring Hal to Oa and subject him to grueling tests to determine whether he is truly Hal and whether Parallax is gone. Forced to forge a new ring over several months, Hal eventually earns his place in the Corps and returns to Earth, where he and John attempt to work together. But John has secretly been fighting Black Hand, a warning sign of the ancient Blackest Night prophecy. The Guardians order John to keep the truth from Hal, fearing his resurrection may be connected to Nekron and the coming darkness. Realizing he is being lied to, Hal breaks into the Guardians' vault. John reports him, forcing Hal to surrender his ring and imprisoning him on Oa. When John disappears, Hal escapes with help from Kilowog, who denounces the Corps and gives Hal his ring. Returning to the vault, Hal discovers the truth: the Lantern Corps have secretly been fighting the Black Lantern Corps for years, and the Blackest Night has begun. Hal rescues John, only to face Black Hand and millions of undead Lanterns. As John's will begins to fade, Hal stands alone. Inspired by him, John rises beside him. Atrocitus, Saint Walker and Indigo-1 arrive, uniting four Corps against Nekron. They cannot defeat the Blackest Night, but their combined light forces Nekron back into the darkness. Returning to Oa, Hal and John confront the Guardians. When they try to take Hal's ring, John stands with him, followed by Lanterns across the Corps who willingly denounce their rings. The Guardians are forced to relent. Hal declares that when the Blackest Night returns, the Corps will be ready.
