Hal Jordan has spent his entire life chasing danger. As Ferris Air's best test pilot, he is reckless and convinced there is nothing he cannot handle. Everything changes when an alien spacecraft crashes near Coast City. Inside is Abin Sur, a dying Green Lantern who crossed the galaxy searching for a fugitive tied to a mysterious red energy. Before dying, Abin's ring chooses Hal as his successor, transporting him to Oa. Hal discovers Earth is but a tiny part of an enormous intergalactic civilization protected by the Green Lantern Corps, who enforce the laws of the Guardians of the Universe. Hal struggles to accept this new reality, learning that the ring chooses those capable of overcoming fear rather than the fearless.He trains under Sinestro, the Corps' greatest warrior and Abin Sur's former partner. Sinestro sees Hal as undisciplined but recognizes his inner courage. Their bond grows into a genuine friendship through training and dangerous missions. Hal's first assignment takes them to a distant world facing unexplained attacks. While the Corps blames ordinary criminals, Hal and Sinestro find evidence of an ancient force feeding on rage. This leads them to Atrocitus, a survivor of a catastrophe that destroyed his entire home planet. Blaming the Guardians for failing to prevent the tragedy, Atrocitus uses a strange red energy to build an army fueled by pure rage.Hal realizes Atrocitus believes the Corps is too focused on order and has forgotten the people it protects. This forces Hal to question the Guardians and Sinestro's rigid methods. Sinestro defends order but begins wondering if Atrocitus exposed a real flaw. In the climax, Hal defies the Guardians to save a civilization, proving he truly understands a Lantern's duty. Atrocitus escapes, leaving behind a warning of a larger threat. Hal returns to Earth as its official protector. Sinestro proudly welcomes him, but the final scene shows Sinestro alone, questioning if the Guardians are truly worthy of power.
