In WWII, a curmudgeonly hermit whose wife and child succumbed to disease is left to care for a young boy, whose life is dominated by abuse from his paranoid, religious zealot mother. When the man hears of the boy's nightmarish home life, he gives his young charge a life of love and friendship.
