Story Plot

Gears of War is a 2026 American military science fiction action film written and directed by Roland Emmerich and based on the video game franchise of the same name. Produced by Legendary Pictures and The Stone Quarry and distributed by Lionsgate Films, it is the first installment in the Gears of War trilogy, a franchise that is set in the same universe as the games as well as in-between the events of the main games and the RAAM's Shadow DLC. Gears of War features an ensemble cast that includes Sasha Calle, Ian Whyte, Diego Tinoco, Sung Kang, Trevante Rhodes, Emilia Clarke, Chris Pratt, Karl Urban, Cate Blanchett, Liev Schreiber, Jack Quaid, Jason Momoa, Robert Patrick, and Liam Neeson. The film follows Clementine Valera, a stranded and the younger sister of a gear who died one year ago, as she joins the Coalition of Gears and is placed in Delta squad, later going into conflict with the cruel Locust general RAAM in the snowy landscape near Mount Kadar. Gears of War opened in theaters on December 1st, 2026; it received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences who praised the atmosphere, visuals, story, action sequences, Hans Zimmer's musical score, direction, performances (particularly Calle, Whyte, Pratt, and Patrick), and faithfulness to the source material, but critics found the violent content too graphically similar to the games and criticized its long running time. It was also a box-office success, grossing $853 million worldwide. A sequel is in development

  • Plot: As the moon rises through the weekends, the kryll, which are bloodthirsty bat-like demons, swarm certain parts of Jacinto as well as the area around Mount Kadar, the tallest mountain in the world.
  • Clementine Valera, a stranded who lives near the mountain, is approached by an old friend of hers, Michael Barrick. He explains to Valera that her older sister Alicia was killed saving a life, but she already knows she was killed and is aware of who was responsible. Barrick notices the various signs of grief in Valera's eyes, and asks her if she wants to join the COG and offers her a place in his squad, Delta, originally Zeta, as he was sent by the squad's leader Minh Young Kim. Valera accepts, wanting to honor her sister. Arriving in Jacinto, Valera is welcomed into Delta by Kim, who introduces her to members Dominic "Dom" Santiago, Jace Stratton, Tai Kaliso, Clayton Carmine and his son Zachary.
  • Valera bonds easily with the squad, especially Jace, Tai, and Clayton, and starts catching up with Barrick. Afterwards, the squad is ordered by Command, operated by colonel Victor Hoffman, to head back where Valera and Barrick had arrived in Jacinto from, indicating that they are being sent to Mount Kadar for several rescue missions.
  • Accompanied by a robot named Jack, who also helps the squad contact Control, operated by lieutenant Anya Stroud, Delta make their way towards Kadar. Valera reveals her knowledge to the squad about her sister's death, but does not mention her last name, fearing that Kim's reaction would put the squad in danger. Before reaching Kadar, the squad is forced to save Alpha squad after Valera charges at members of the Locust army, the COG's rivals. Alpha is entirely killed except Damon Baird, their last member, and he joins Delta despite Kim's warning. Valera and Kim argue about the difference between honor and sacrifice, but are subsequently stopped by both Barrick and Control. Command joins Control on contact and, like Barrick and the rest of the squad, ultimately sides with Valera despite her rebellious behavior, reminding Kim that honor should be chosen first. Hoffman also shames Kim for not letting go of his anger towards the locust general RAAM, revealing that he only chooses sacrifice because of the past. Enraged and disheartened, Kim pressures on alone, forcing Barrick to temporarily take over command of Delta.
  • Arriving at Kadar, the squad find that Kim has already entered and quickly discover that he was captured by the Locust. As they continue through and track Kim down, they question Valera about who her sister is, and she admits her full name to them all. Jace opens up to Valera about the fact that she could have been his sister-in-law, as he was in love with Alicia. Valera also finally confesses that she knows the killer of her sister is none other than RAAM, and she admits that she refuses to seek revenge, as it will not bring Alicia back. After numerous battles, the squad is finally able to locate Kim, and when they rescue him, he apologizes to Valera, who reluctantly reveals her name to him. Kim finally relents over his need for vengeance against RAAM, knowing that it will only result in either his or Valera's death.
  • As they press on, they realize they have fallen into a trap. A heavy battle ensues, resulting in several casualties throughout the reinforcements, but Delta prevails. However, Valera sees a figure approaching through the fire and smoke, surrounded by a swarm of the kryll. When Zachary opens fire upon the figure, it is revealed to be none other than RAAM himself, who charges straight towards Zachary and stabs him to death, devastating Clayton. The squad lose the fight against RAAM, who escapes via the kryll, and Valera remarks "That's the first time I've seen the very warrior who murdered my sister."
  • Meanwhile, RAAM consults Myrrah, the Locust Queen, who orders him to unleash a riftworm as a way to get Delta out of the way. Delta soon find themselves being swallowed by the riftworm afterwards; however, Dom is kidnapped instead. Valera wakes up from a memory/dream where she had watched her parents die, and how she was taken in by her sister. She then wakes up to find herself being shaken awake by Kim. Having dealt with a riftworm before, Valera assumes temporary leadership of the squad until they can cut their way out. After destroying all three hearts (revealed through Valera's guidance and experience), the squad cut their way out of the riftworm before they can drown in its blood. Command contacts the squad through Control, and Hoffman somberly explains that the mission has failed and that their new one is to rescue Dom.
