Christopher Jacob Abbott is an American actor. He is known for his work in independent films. In 2011, Abbott made his feature film debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene and his Broadway debut in the revival of the play The House of Blue Leaves. Abbott received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for the drama film James White (2015). He portrayed astronaut David Scott in the biographical drama film First Man (2018), and had further supporting roles in the films A Most Violent Year (2014), It Comes at Night (2017), Possessor (2020), Black Bear (2020), and Poor Things (2023). Abbott portrayed Capt. Yossarian in the Hulu miniseries Catch-22 (2019) for which he earned a Golden Globe Award nomination. He also acted in the HBO series Girls (2012–2016), the USA Network series The Sinner (2017), and the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room (2023).

Nick Fury's decades-long battle with the Infinity Formula began in World War II when a Nazi landmine blast in France left him on the brink of death, forcing French partisans to rush him to the secret laboratory of Dr. Berthold Sternberg. To save the sergeant's life, Sternberg injected him with an experimental chemical compound that successfully repaired his body and stabilized his cellular structure, though Fury quickly fled after an American bombing raid destroyed the facility. Six months after the war, Fury received a package containing a serum dose and a letter from Sternberg, which he ignored until he woke up the next morning having aged nearly sixty years overnight. Panicked, Fury injected the compound and instantly returned to his youth, realizing that the surgery had permanently altered his biology and that missing an annual booster shot would cause him to rapidly age and die within days. Exploiting this dependency, Sternberg extorted massive sums of money from Fury every year, forcing the burgeoning operative to complete black-ops missions throughout the 1950s and beyond to afford the doses while watching his wartime friends age around him. This painful cycle of blackmail continued for decades until mobster Steel Harris murdered Sternberg to control the supply himself, prompting Fury to hunt down the syndicate in Las Vegas and reclaim his freedom. Though the formula was lost in the ensuing fight and Fury began rapidly aging once again, Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine managed to retrieve the final doses just in time to save his life, allowing S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists to synthesize the compound so Fury could permanently maintain his peak youth as a master spy.
