Synopsis

"Freebird Rising" tells the raw, electric, and inspiring story of Steve Gaines, the gifted guitarist and songwriter who became a transformative figure in Lynyrd Skynyrd. Known for his rare blend of soulful, bluesy finesse and fiery, unrestrained rock energy, Steve joined Skynyrd just as the band was losing its creative direction. Through his humble but undeniable talent, he brought fresh energy, hope, and profound songwriting that would soon be recognized as some of the band’s best work. The film follows Steve’s journey from his roots in Oklahoma to the meteoric heights of rock stardom. It’s a story about resilience, family, and the pursuit of a dream even when the odds are stacked high. Audiences will see his formative years, influenced by the blues of the Mississippi Delta, his fierce loyalty to his family, and his sister Cassie, who eventually joined him on tour with the band as a backup singer. Ronald Wayne Van Zant was an American singer, best known as the founding lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was the older brother of Johnny Van Zant, the current lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Donnie Van Zant, the founder and vocalist of the rock band .38 Special.
