William Freeland was a white slave owner in Maryland. Unlike others, he allowed Frederick Douglass to learn to read and write. This education fueled Douglass' desire for freedom. His experiences under Freeland's ownership pushed him to escape slavery in 1838, becoming a powerful abolitionist and leader in the fight for emancipation.
