Set in the 1860s, Fingersmith follows Sue Trinder, an orphan raised among a "den of thieves" in the London slums by the maternal Mrs. Sucksby. Sue is a "fingersmith"—Victorian slang for a pickpocket—who becomes central to an elaborate con devised by a charismatic swindler known as "Gentleman".
