Every solution fails. Determined to confront Galactus before he reaches Earth, the Avengers and Fantastic Four venture into deep space. There they are met by Silver Surfer, who urges them to abandon hope and spend their remaining time with those they love, insisting that no civilization has ever survived Galactus' hunger. But when Reed refuses to surrender, the Surfer reveals the existence of the Ultimate Nullifier - a legendary weapon capable of erasing any target from existence, yet so powerful that a single mistake could unravel the universe itself. With no other choice, the heroes infiltrate Galactus' colossal worldship. While the Avengers launch a hopeless assault to distract the cosmic giant, the Fantastic Four search for the Nullifier, battling Galactus' ruthless herald, Terrax the Tamer. joined once more by the Silver Surfer, the team secures the weapon and places it in Reed's hands. Standing before the Devourer of Worlds, Reed gambles everything, threatening to use the Ultimate Nullifier unless Galactus abandons Earth forever. Knowing the weapon could destroy far more than himself, Galactus reluctantly retreats, sparing humanity and disappearing into the depths of space. Earth celebrates its survival, but the victory is short-lived. As the Fantastic Four return home, Professor Xavier contacts Reed with terrifying news: the X-Men never returned from their mission to the Moon. On the lunar surface, the heroes' abandoned spacecraft lies in ruins. The defenders of Earth have vanished.
