Film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical
Falsettos centers around Marvin, a gay man who divorces his wife: Trina, for another man: Whizzer. Marvin tries to keep his family (plus Whizzer) together to replicate the heterosexual life he once had. Jason is scared he will end up gay like his father. Trina is struggling to process how Marvin ended up gay and ends up marrying his psychiatrist, Mendel. Marvin is scared of fully admitting to himself that he can't expect Whizzer to conform to heterosexual gender norms. Whizzer struggles to stay monogamous and conform to the role of a housewife (which Marvin hates), as well as struggles to live with Trina and Jason, but bonds a little with Trina over their shared hatred (and love) for Marvin. After Marvin becomes more and more emotionally abusive, Marvin kicks Whizzer out of their house and ends up hitting Trina over her relationship with Mendel. Two years later, Marvin and Whizzer meet once again at Jason's baseball game and they restart their relationship, Marvin this time much more mature and and accepting of his sexuality. However, the HIV/AIDS crisis is just around the corner.
