The plot tells about the American society of the near future, in which books are banned; "firefighters", to which the main characters Guy Montag belong, burn down any books found. In the course of the novel, Montag becomes disillusioned with the ideals of the society of which he is a part, becomes an outcast and, when realized to a small underground group of outcasts, as a result of which they memorize the texts of books in order to save them for posterity.
