The cello, short for the Italian violoncello, is a bowed string instrument in the violin family. It's larger than the violin and viola, and tuned an octave lower than the viola. Cellos are popular in orchestras and chamber music, but can also be heard in jazz, folk, rock, and pop. The cello's rich tones make it a vital part of string quartets and chamber groups.
