Set in London at the hinge point between the dying of punk and the birth of what would become the New Wave era, Electric Babylon follows Vera Popović, a 22-year-old Yugoslav immigrant who arrived in London at sixteen and has spent six years navigating the city's music underground. She is a singer who hasn't found her sound yet, a woman who has learned to inhabit multiple worlds simultaneously (immigrant London, underground music, the fraying edges of art school culture), and someone burning with ambition she has no clear outlet for. When she falls into the orbit of The Babylon, a fictional Soho music club that becomes the crucible for the era's defining sounds, she finds her voice — but also finds herself entangled with Miles, the club's charismatic owner and her creative antagonist; with Cleo, a Black British singer from Brixton who becomes her closest friend and creative collaborator; and with the broader social upheaval of Thatcher's Britain beginning to close around everything that Electric Babylon represents. The show is a love letter to a specific moment of transformation — musical, political, personal — with Dua Lipa's Albanian heritage deeply embedded in Vera's immigrant experience.
