Synopsis

Doors is a 2024 American gothic supernatural horror film written, co-produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and starring Anne Hathaway, Alex Vincent, Bill Moseley, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Jamie Lee Curtis. It follows four individuals who are terrorized by an unknown presence in a hotel they are staying in, and they realize they must escape to survive. One of them is Vivian Kyle (Hathaway), who seeks the help of her mother Willow (Curtis) as she is an exorcist for spirits. Doors was released to theaters on May 30th, 2024, to critical and universal acclaim, earning praise for its atmosphere, Shyamalan's direction, visuals, James Newton Howard's musical score, cinematography, emotional depth, Hathaway's performance, and surprise plot twist. It was also a box-office success, grossing $745 million worldwide against a budget of $189 million and a break-even point of $200 million. Many have considered it to be Shyamalan's best horror film of all time, as it is the highest-rated horror film in his career based on rotten tomatoes, behind his best-reviewed film, Gods.

  • misterwolf Plot: An off-duty police officer staying at a seemingly ordinary hotel finishes talking with his wife on the phone. As he steps out of his room, a darkness overshadows him and, supposedly, he escapes.

  • misterwolf Three years later, Vivian Kyle, who is the daughter of the officer who disappeared, goes to a remarkably similar hotel with her younger brother Damian, and in the morning, they meet Michael Baines and Kevin Edwards during breakfast. Later, at evening, an evil and mysterious presence haunts the hotel, and Vivian realizes that it is the same hotel her father was staying in.

  • misterwolf Willow, Vivian's mother and the wife of the latter's father, enters the hotel and encounters the Screech. She stomps on it and kills it before running into Vivian and the surviving group. They encounter another entity, the Rush, whom Baines distracts to give time for the others to escape. He eventually escapes it, only to be killed by the Ambush.

  • misterwolf Vivian and Willow separate from Damian and Edwards in order to protect themselves and the latter from the entities. Vivian discovers the only entity that helps anyone unfortunate enough to enter the hotel, Hide. It conceals her from Seek, and she eventually reunites with Willow, Damian, and Edwards. They discover Baines' corpse, and eventually, the Ambush kills Edwards before they escape it and encounter the main and final entity, the Figure. During the chase, they encounter the Rush again, and Damian sacrifices himself to save them both. The Figure finds them again and chases them.

  • misterwolf Vivian and Willow manage to escape the Figure, but they also realize that even though it cannot see, it can smell them. Edwards is revealed to have survived but is infected by ghost blood, indicating that he is going to die. The Figure catches up to them in the library, and he kills Willow instantly; as Edwards succumbs to his infection, Vivian is forced to escape the library, only to find that Seek is chasing her again, but she outruns him and hides before breaking down into tears.

  • misterwolf She eventually escapes, only to find a still breathing Damian is looking for a key that unlocks the first floor, the floor they have been trying to get to. Vivian finds the key, but the Figure catches up to them one last time.

  • misterwolf It instantly kills Willow and eventually catches up to Vivian. Upon being strangled by the Figure, she notices that it is hesitant to kill her; recalling that her father had disappeared in the hotel and remembering that paranormal researcher bodies were found, she locates a scar on the Figure's face. Vivian finally realizes that her father did not escape the hotel and has been a ghost the entire time. He suddenly lets her escape and happily passes away and fades to dust. Vivian quickly comes to terms with the fact that her father is dead, and is encouraged by an hallucination of her Willow to move on as the end credits roll.
