An enslaved man who works as harbor pilot on a confederate warship in Charleston, South Carolina, Robert Smalls is strong-willed, observant and intelligent. After his failed attempt at achieving some control over his own life brings his wife into conflict with her white oppressors, he can no longer tolerate their life of slavery. With intimate knowledge of the Charleston Harbor and a drive to live a life of freedom, Robert devises a plan to steal the very ship he has been forced to serve aboard.
