Synopsis

This is inspired by the true story of a real-life, little-known American hero — Robert Smalls — who, as an enslaved person in Charleston at the height of the Civil War, pulled off the most audacious heist in history — a suicide mission if caught — by stealing his friends and family and the Confederate warship on which he served to run the naval blockade in the treacherous South Carolina waters and defect to the North.

Description of Hannah Smalls:

Robert’s kind, loving and strong-willed wife, who was given permission to marry Robert because her oppressor hoped Hannah and Robert would have children, so he could have more slaves. After Hannah is beaten by her owner simply for his bitter moods, Hannah and Robert agree that they would rather die than continue this life. She supports his decision to run, even though it could mean their deaths.
