In the late 19th century, Clara is married off to an abusive wealthy banker named Marcus. She lives inside books and stares out the window. When she becomes pregnant she does anything and everything in her power to protect her child, a girl named Charlotte. When the little girl is 8 years old, her life changes forever when her father turns up dead and Clara is the prime suspect.
