elizabetharnoniThe film adapts elements of Secret Origin and Superman Smashes the Klan, and the first season of Superman: The Animated Series, specifically the three-part Last Son of Krypton arc and the sixth episode, The Way of All Flesh. The film is framed as a series of loosely connected vignettes of Superman establishing himself in Metropolis as he battles different criminals and helps the people of Metropolis, not as a hero, but as a friend. Structured more similarly to something like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood than any traditional superhero film. Moments include Jimmy Olsen’s first photo of Superman and Superman’s first interview with Lois Lane. Among these are flashbacks set during Clark’s years in Smallville based on the plotline from Superman Smashes The Klan. These moments build up Superman’s rivalry with Lex Luthor who in the climax, turns mercenary John Corben into the cyborg Metallo. Corben was previously apprehended by the Man of Steel while stealing LexCorp technology on Luthor’s orders so he could sell it on the black market. In the final battle at the heart of the city, Superman is downed and nearly defeated by Metallo until the people of Metropolis, inspired by Superman’s good nature, disorient Metallo in a moment akin to the “You mess with one of us” scene in Spider-Man 2002. In a mid-credits scene, we cut to a bar in space. Lobo is hanging out with a slew of galactic scoundrels, telling them of his great feats when he receives a new contract. He says "A kryptonian? Well ain't that interestin'. Drinks on me, boys. The Main Man's gonna be fraggin' loaded once this is over!” In a post-credits scene, we cut to the inside of a circus in Gotham City, as the show is about to start. The ringleader shouts at his staff to get everything in place before the audience comes in. In the corner, a man disguised as a circus worker sabotages the trapeze ropes.
