Karen Chord tried to treat her wounds with her own inventions after becoming paralyzed from the waist down from a bullet wound she received while using her metamutant shadow powers to fight criminals. As the Shadow Bee, Karen began her fight against crime by creating mechanical exoskeletons for her legs, creating crutches with electrical "stingers," and giving herself artificial wings so she could fly.
