He narrowly escapes and the voice of John Kramer himself comes on the intercom to tell him to escape his game, or die horrifically trying. Mel is a tough guy who never follows orders, definitely not Ward’s. Mel is introduced after escaping his own trap on his own, he’s often at odds with Ward. Eventually he attempts to betray the group, leading to him and Ward having a vicious fight leading to Mel’s death. He was put into the game because he along with his friends killed a helpless old couple as teens.
