  • accaffrey Jessica, a young woman in the 50s, is beginning to notice strange abilities that she has. It confuses her and, one night she goes to a traveling carnival to take her mind off the situation. There, she stumbles into a psychic's tent. The psychic is called Madame Merilda, and knows of her strange powers. Jessica asks what they are, and Merilda tells her that she is the descendant of a witch. She tells her the story. Jessica had an ancestor named Annette, back in 1692. She lives with her ill, bed-ridden father and takes care of him. One day she and her two friends Martha and Gilda go for a walk in the woods. As it begins to get darker, the three are halted by a pale white goat in the middle of the trail. Something is eerie and off about the goat. As the three try to figure out what to do, the goat suddenly squeals and charges them. Thinking fast, Annette throws her hands out, and in a moment that is blocked for the audience, uses some sort of magic power to kill the goat. Martha and Gilda are bewildered, but it is then they see a small boy standing at the edge of the trail. He saw the whole thing. He runs back to the village before Annette can stop him, and soon everyone knows of her witchcraft. Not only is she accused, but her innocent friends are put on trial as well. They are torn to shreds by the fierce prosecutor Cutler Payne and the biased Judge Tobias Spall. And when things take a turn for the worse, Martha and Gilda turn on Annette in order to save themselves. Annette is sentenced to burning in the town square. Before she is taken out of her home, she asks her lover James to care for her baby, whom she had kept secret. James agrees, and leaves out the back window as Annette is taken out. She is tied up to the pole covered in hay as the townspeople come to watch. Meanwhile, James drops the baby off on his friend's doorstep and rushes to the town center. In attempt to save Annette, he runs over and tackles Judge Spall just as he's lit the fire. The two fight as Annette burns, and eventually, Spall bashes James' head in, killing him. Back in the present, Merilda tells Jessica that the powers shouldn't effect her too much as long as she doesn't say a certain four-word prayer that would unleash the spirits of the witches who are long dead. Jessica, however, does not listen to Madame Merilda. She wants to know the truth. So she recites the words, and out creep all of the monsters and creatures of the night, to begin their takeover.
