Not only is Gerald Robotnik one of the greatest scientific minds of all time, but he's also the grandfather of Doctor Eggman himself. His greatest creation is the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow's creation was to find a cure for immortality for Gerald's granddaughter, Maria. The government considered the project too dangerous, and had everyone who knew about the project killed in a raid, including Maria. Originally positive about helping mankind, his love quickly turned to hate and slowly became a rage-filled psychopath hellbent on revenge. His last moments on Earth were being killed by gunfire, but his plans were almost successful when Eggman awaked Shadow 50 years later.
