Carmilla is a gothic horror novella by J. Sheridan Le Fanu about a young woman named Laura who befriends a mysterious and alluring female vampire named Carmilla. Their relationship is intense, but as Carmilla's vampiric nature is revealed through disturbing occurrences and Laura's health declines, Laura and her father must ultimately hunt and destroy Carmilla to save themselves. The story predates Dracula and explores themes of gothic romance, isolation, and sexuality.
