Carol Danvers is a gifted but reckless Air Force fighter pilot whose career collapses after a disastrous mission. Given a second chance as a security officer aboard a S.W.O.R.D. orbital research station, Carol becomes caught in an attack by Skrull infiltrators that destroys an experimental faster-than-light engine powered by Tesseract energy. The explosion transforms Carol into a human-Kree hybrid with extraordinary cosmic abilities. Taken to the Kree Empire by the alien scientist Mar-Vell, Carol joins Starforce and becomes an elite warrior, traveling across the galaxy to fight the Skrulls. But as she gains confidence in her powers, she begins to question the Kree Empire's propaganda and discovers that the Kree-Skrull War is being manipulated by the Supreme Intelligence to maintain Kree control. Carol's worldview shatters when she learns that Mar-Vell secretly loved a Skrull named Anelle and fathered Dorrek, a child born of both Kree and Skrull blood. When Dorrek is captured by the Kree, Carol realizes that she has become exactly what the Supreme Intelligence wanted: another weapon in an endless war. Choosing compassion over power, she turns against the Kree regime and fights to rescue Dorrek while preventing both sides from destroying each other. After Mar-Vell sacrifices himself, Carol destroys the Supreme Intelligence and helps bring the war to an end. Finally embracing the name Captain Marvel, Carol returns briefly to Earth before setting out into space to protect worlds that have no heroes of their own.
