In 1942, frail but determined Steve Rogers repeatedly tries to enlist and is rejected until Dr. Abraham Erskine selects him for Project Rebirth. The Super-Soldier Serum transforms him into peak human form. He becomes a propaganda symbol (“Captain America”) before insisting on real combat. With the Howling Commandos and Peggy Carter, he takes the fight to HYDRA and the Red Skull. The climax involves a desperate mission against a super-weapon; Steve crashes a plane into the Arctic to stop it and is frozen in ice. Framing device or post-credits: modern-day S.H.I.E.L.D. recovers the ice and the shield, with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, continuing from the Iron Man cameo) overseeing the find.
