Phase 2 series
Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff are both highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but despite having crossed paths on several missions, they have never truly worked together. Their dynamic changes when a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative is mysteriously killed during a routine mission. The assassin appears to have used techniques belonging to several different agents, leading Nick Fury to assign Hawkeye and Black Widow to investigate. Their investigation takes them across the world as they uncover a series of attacks targeting S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel and classified intelligence. Every crime seems to have been committed by a different assassin, until Clint and Natasha realize they are dealing with a single enemy: Taskmaster, a mercenary capable of perfectly copying any fighting technique he observes. The more they fight him, the more dangerous he becomes, as he studies their movements and learns how to anticipate their every attack. Taskmaster is not simply targeting S.H.I.E.L.D.—he is collecting information on the world’s most dangerous fighters, including the Avengers. His ultimate goal is to create a complete combat database capable of predicting and neutralizing virtually any enhanced individual. As the agents close in on him, Taskmaster forces Clint and Natasha into their most dangerous mission yet, turning everything they have learned against them. Realizing they cannot defeat an opponent who can predict their every move, Hawkeye and Black Widow abandon their usual methods and rely entirely on instinct and trust. Together, they defeat Taskmaster and destroy his database, preventing the information from falling into the wrong hands. Taskmaster finally loses and S.H.I.E.L.D. captures him.
