Black Widow and Hawkeye is a 2001 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film was directed by Cate Shortland from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Craig Fairbrass, David Hasselhoff, Michelle Rodriguez, Tom Hanks, Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley. Set after the events of 9/11, the film sees Natasha and Yelena on the run and forced to confront their past while also having to deal with a black market mercenary and a terrorist. Black Widow premiered at events around the world on September 29, 2001, and was released in the United States on October 9. Black Widow and Hawkeye broke several box office records and grossed over $379 million worldwide. The film received positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for the action sequences and for the performances of Blunt and Damon although controversy was spawned from the inclusion of 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden.
