Felonious Gru, Sr. is the main protagonist of Universal•Illumination's Despicable Me franchise. Once a supervillain aspiring to steal the moon, Gru would adopt three girls named Margo, Edith, and Agnes one day in an attempt to use them to retrieve a shrink ray needed for his plans. However, over the course of the movie, Gru would warm up to his three daughters, despite initially seeing them as disposable. And in the end, he forsakes his plans for achieving villain stardom in favor of becoming a true father to them.
Eventually, Gru catches the attention of the AVL and is hired as a brand new agent, where he meets his future wife, Lucy Wilde. And while he fathers his daughters with her, he also fathers an infant birth son named Gru Jr.. As a bonus, Gru is Dr. Nefario's boss and best friend.
He is voiced by Steve Carell (who also played Michael Scott on The Office, Ned McDodd in Horton Hears a Who!, Hammy in Over the Hedge, and Blue in IF). Steve Carell also voiced Gru's twin brother, Dru, in Despicable Me 3.
