Bruce Wayne has been retired from being Batman for several years. He falls in love with a woman named Elizabeth Miller and marries her. Clark Kent serves as Bruce's best man at the wedding. On their honeymoon, Elizabeth is killed by a toy bee injecting her with Joker toxin. Devastated, Bruce puts the cowl back on to hunt down the killer. Because the Joker is supposedly already dead, the investigation spirals. Superman steps in to stop Batman from crossing the line and committing vigilante murder, causing the two heroes to clash. Lex Luthor is revealed to be pulling the strings behind the scenes. It turns out Lex resurrected or collaborated with a clone/successor of the Joker, who engineered Elizabeth to get close to Bruce. After a brutal fight between Batman and Superman where they realize they have been manipulated, Batman confronts the Joker. Ultimately, Batman chooses to spare the Joker after Superman intervenes and demands he unmask.
