When a series of strange murders begins to expose connections between some of Gotham’s oldest and most influential families, Batman starts investigating a conspiracy buried beneath the city’s history. The deeper he goes, the more he discovers that Gotham may have been controlled from the shadows for generations. Whispers of a secret society known as the Court of Owls begin to surface. To Bruce, the Court sounds like nothing more than an old Gotham legend, a story passed down through generations to frighten children. But as evidence begins to accumulate, Batman is forced to consider an unsettling possibility: the Court may be real. The investigation takes Bruce into the hidden architecture of Gotham, revealing forgotten buildings, secret passages and mysteries that challenge everything he thought he knew about his city. Even his own family history may be connected to the conspiracy. Meanwhile, a mysterious assassin known as the Talon begins hunting those who stand in the Court’s way. Unlike any opponent Batman has faced before, the Talon seems almost impossible to stop, pushing Bruce to the limits of his physical and psychological endurance. As the Bat-family becomes involved, Batman’s obsession with uncovering the truth begins to put everyone around him at risk. Tim and the others must decide how far they are willing to follow Bruce into a mystery that appears to have no end. The more Batman investigates, the more Gotham itself seems to turn against him. And now, for the first time, Batman realizes that someone has been watching Gotham long before he ever put on the cowl.
