The film starts at Alfred Pennyworth's burial, with a Sam Spade film noir narrator, as Bruce Wayne talks to a death figure standing there that only he sees. The first big action set sees Nightwing's death at the hands of Harley Quinn, the Joker's daughter trying to kill Batman to avenge her father's death. Then, the film goes on to suggest that the entire Batman story is a figment of Bruce Wayne's imagination - forged from a mental collapse after his parents were killed. This is revealed to be a hallucination in Batman's mind caused by the fear toxin of Scarecrow, the alter ego of Dr. Jonathan Crane who uses his position as professor of psychology at Gotham University, where Dick Grayson had since graduated from, and as head psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum to conduct his fear experiments. The film would have depicted the Scarecrow and Harley Quinn teaming up with Hugo Strange to drive Batman insane and have him committed to Arkham. After their defeat, the film would have ended with Bruce Wayne traveling to Bali and entering a cave, where he allows himself to be swarmed by bats to symbolize that he has conquered fear.
