After escaping Abstergo, Callum Lynch leads a group of modern-day Assassins in a race to find the ancient Scepter of Amun-Ra, a powerful artifact that controls human will. To locate it, Callum must relive the memories of his ancestor, Claudia Auditore, sister of Ezio, during the Italian Renaissance. As both Callum and Claudia battle the Templars in their respective eras, they discover that the Templars have developed a way to manipulate history through the Animus, forcing Callum to face an existential crisis as past and present collide in a climactic showdown.
