Michael is the sophisticated, self-made kingpin of Los Angeles—an "American-born mestizo" known as El Guero for his light hair and eyes. He takes Tony under his wing, seeing a younger, hungrier version of himself. But Michael has grown soft, valuing family and legitimacy over the brutal instincts that built his empire. When El Sapo's war claims his daughter Marisol, Michael is broken beyond repair. In a last act of desperation, he gives Tony the chance to kill El Sapo, effectively handing over his empire—and his life—to his protégé.
