Synopsis

Among the Sleep is a 2022 American epic science fiction thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film is based on the video game of the same name. It stars Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Jackson Robert Scott, Bradley Cooper, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carrie-Anne Moss, Danny Glover, and Ian McShane. In the film, 4-year-old David (Scott) opens a birthday present given to him by his father, Justin (Cooper), who is denied at the chance at seeing David by his mother, Zoey (Brewster). Within it is a stuffed bear simply named Teddy (voiced by Diesel), who helps Zoey protect David from evil spirits. Among the Sleep premiered in Los Angeles on January 28th, 2022, and was released on February 19th; it was a financial success, grossing $985 million worldwide on its $157 million budget, and received universal acclaim, with praise for Shyamalan's direction, screenplay, visual effects, its aesthetics, the performances, the emotional weight of the story, cinematography, James Newton Howard's score, and references to the source material, as well as its different approaches. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, as well as one of the best game adaptions of all time. Diesel's performance was widely acclaimed, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, while Brewster was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.

  • misterwolf Plot: 4-year-old David's alcoholic mother, Zoey, begins to cease drinking during her son's birthday, especially after her separated husband, Justin, gives David a present. Zoey takes David to his room, and gives him his father's present; as he goes to open it, he discovers that the object inside it has escaped it. He finds the present, who reveals itself as a stuffed bear named Teddy, and he befriends the boy and vows to guard him at all times, as he was sent by David's father for a reason.

  • misterwolf Teddy tells David how he was made; he explains that Justin, having been distraught over leaving his own wife and son since the latter was born, befriended a spirit and made a stuffed bear for him to possess, and told him to protect David from the spirits that will haunt Zoey's house. Zoey overhears this and enters the room. Teddy explains the same story, to which Zoey breaks down into tears as she now knows the true reason why Justin left. She calls the latter, and they reconcile. The spirits mentioned by Justin invade the house and destroy it's electricity, giving Teddy the chance to do what he was tasked to do: protect David.

  • misterwolf Martha, Zoey's mother, arrives to provide the group with food, weapons, and flashlights, before Zoey's father, Howard, sacrifices himself to save them. Justin arrives, but decides to distract the spirits before entering the house, and he manages to subdue one of them, the Shadow. He enters the house, and discovers Martha's lifeless body. Teddy, Zoey, and David manage to stay unnoticed by the Spirit, the most powerful of the two, before Justin finds and joins them.

  • misterwolf The Spirit eventually finds the group, but they outrun him and hide; the Shadow goes rogue and fights the Spirit, giving the group enough time to head to the basement. Justin introduces himself to David, who accepts him as his father as he knows why he left. Teddy is forced to engage the Spirit after the Shadow is destroyed. The Spirit attempts to kill Teddy, but Zoey temporarily blinds him with her flashlight, saving Teddy before heading back down to the basement.

  • misterwolf Teddy, knowing the Spirit will not back down, grabs a lighter and a water bottle. Zoey, David and Justin leave the basement, while Teddy and the Spirit engage again; Teddy is seriously injured, and he loses his right arm, but nonetheless, he destroys the Spirit with the lighter, then extingushes the flame with the bottle.

  • misterwolf In the aftermath, Teddy, having been stitched back together by Justin, promises David that he will not stop protecting him. Zoey begins to repair her relationship with Justin, and she abandons her alcoholism completely. Teddy watches his first sunrise with Zoey, David and Justin, and remarks that it is "beautiful", before the end credits roll.
