First Appearance: The Tenth Planet. Jonathan Harris started getting traction for his role as the First Doctor, and it became clear that he would be leaving the role to participate in bigger projects. Before he left he said, "There is only one man in America who should play the Doctor, and that is Dick Van Dyke." His parting wishes were granted as Dick Van Dyke took the role of the Second Doctor, after a stroke of creative genius from the writers introduced regeneration as a concept to the show, later allowing Doctor Who's longevity. The Second Doctor was forced to regenerate by the Timelords during the events of 'The War Games', where he was exiled to Earth.
