Deeply loyal to her wife Roz, who is bookish but just as tough. Together they're the adopted "grandmas" of the community, often caring for the kids because they didn't get to have any of their own Bill Jaxx - likable dad, soft on the outside but packs a punch when it comes to the safety of his family Laurie Jaxx - Bill's wife, dies early on Eckhart - young good spirited deputy ready to jump into action Rawlings - kind hearted sheriff, doesn't like using force unless he absolutely has to Amy Topper - compassionate school teacher, does her best to keep the kids safe, meets a grizzly end Jim Bob - old kook, more resourceful than he lets on
