Darius the III was king of the Persian Empire from 336 to 330 BC. He was a steward of the royal court when Artaserxes the IV died, and he was the only relative of the dead king, so he succeeded him. His story is dramatic, after only 2 years of govern, his empire was invaded by the Macedonians, he leaded two massive armies at Issus e at Gaugamela, and was defeated both times. After Gaugamela he seaked refuge in the eastern satrapies, but he was betrayed by his own men in 330 BC, when Alexander had already declared himself "King of Kings".
