James Chatham is Nora Walker's nephew and was born 9 years after Bryce's death. After James's parents died in a car crash, Nora adopted him and raised him in an assertive way. Due to that assertiveness, he learned the line between good and bad before starting school, something Bryce never learned as a child. He played high school football and baseball, where he met Jeffrey and Hannah. He also met Clay, who was aware of his association with Bryce and that Hannah is dating him. He and Clay are shown to be on really good terms, something Bryce and Clay never were in. Like Hannah, James attends Brown University by playing baseball.
