Dietrich Hugo Hermann von Choltitz (9 November 1894 – 5 November 1966) was a German general and member of the Templar Order. Sometimes referred to as the Saviour of Paris, he served in the Wehrmacht (armed forces) of Nazi Germany during World War II in France. Choltitz is chiefly remembered for his role as the last commander of Nazi-occupied Paris against the French Resistance led by an Irish school teacher and Assassin Aquilia Laliberté as the Liberation of Paris (French: libération de Paris) became a battle that took place on 19 August 1944 until the German garrison surrendered the French capital on 25 August in the same year which was liberated from both Nazi and Templar control.
