Born on April 14, 1951, in Moscow, Pyotr Nikolayevich Mamonov was a foundational figure of the Russian underground, a poet, and an actor who underwent one of the most dramatic spiritual transformations in modern culture. He first rose to fame in the 1980s as the frontman of the experimental rock group Zvuki Mu, where his spasmodic, shamanic stage presence earned him international comparisons to Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits. In the late 1990s, Mamonov experienced a profound religious awakening, abandoned the Moscow art scene, and moved to a remote village to live as a devout Orthodox Christian. This shift redefined his late career, leading to his iconic collaborations with director Pavel Lungin, where he played characters grappling with the deepest questions of faith and repentance.
Pyotr Mamonov passed away on July 15, 2021, at the age of 70, due to complications from COVID-19.
