Jack Ryan and his family live in their new home near London, he works for the CIA and has been sent to the British Foreign Intelligence Service (SIS) as an analyst. The CIA asks for help to its British "cousins" to set up an operation consisting in bringing Zaïtzev and his family out of the Soviet territory, while making believe that they were killed in an accident. Ryan's superiors ask him to go as an observer to Budapest, where the SIS will take out the defector, nicknamed "the rabbit".
