The story in a small German town, devastated by the Great War. Maria, a young widow, struggles to provide for Hans after his father's tragic death at the hands of French soldiers during the war. Seeking a better life, Maria makes the difficult decision to leave behind their homeland and start anew in America.
Upon arrival in New York City, the pair face numerous challenges: poverty, language barriers, and cultural differences. However, they find hope and kindness through their new community. Hans befriends a group of street-smart kids, while Maria finds work as a seamstress.
As they navigate their fresh start, Hans and Maria confront memories of their past and learn to heal. They discover the vibrant culture and opportunities of their adopted city, symbolized by the majestic Statue of Liberty.
Through perseverance and resilience, Hans and Maria build a brighter future, finding happiness and belonging in their new home.
