When it was discovered that Dick, a teenage acrobat in a nearby circus, had a split personality disorder and a violent alter ego named "Marc Spector," he was expelled from the circus. However, Bruce Wayne recognized the young man's great potential and hired him to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. Then, drawing inspiration in part from his Marc persona's love with the moon, Dick used his circus attire to fashion the costumed identity of Moonwing. Dick's aggressive Marc Spector persona had a natural expression as Moonwing. Dick eventually managed to balance his two personas and made the decision to make an effort to lead a typical life.
