Synopsis

Maria Tallchief's life is a testament to the power of pursuing one's dreams against all odds. Raised on the Osage Nation reservation in Oklahoma, Maria faced cultural barriers and discrimination, but she never let that deter her from her love of dance. As she followed her passion, she found herself at the center of the ballet world, dancing with George Balanchine's New York City Ballet and becoming its first American-born prima ballerina.

George Balanchine was a Georgian American ballet choreographer, recognized as one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th-century. Styled as the father of American ballet, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and remained its artistic director for more than 35 years. His choreography is characterized by plotless ballets with minimal costume and décor, performed to classical and neoclassical music.
