Hicks crossed the finish line second, behind Lorz, but was later upgraded to a gold medal once Lorz was discovered to have driven. Hicks was suffering so badly in the conditions that he was dosed up on strychnine (rat poison) and brandy at the end of the race and was being physically supported by his support team as he came to the finish. He collapsed immediately after crossing the line. One more dose of strychnine would have been fatal.
