LOVE BOMBING AND COERCIVE CONTROL

Johnny first met Amber when she was 23 and he was 46 and they started dating when she was 25 and he was 48. He had already been married and divorced before Amber was even born. Depp was one of the biggest and highest paid actors at the time they started dating, while she was a relatively unknown up and coming actress. Depp displayed what is known as love bombing. Very early in the relationship a love bomber showers the other with lavish gifts, affection, and attention. It's a form of emotional manipulation to gain control of the other person's emotions. It leads to confusion and trauma once the love bomber's true self is revealed.

From the beginning there was a massive power imbalance in the relationship. The texts and emails from the trial showed how much he hated and attempted to control her career. He considered her ambition and desire to work to be a bad thing. As the relationship progressed, she took fewer and fewer roles and had to hide kissing or s3x scenes from Depp due to his jealousy and desire to control where she was and who she was with. The incident where he kicked her on the plane stemmed from his jealousy over her shooting a movie with James Franco, a much younger man. The goal is to make the other person dependent on them in every way possible. Depp had taken Amber's car under the guise of having it fixed and she was often forced to go everywhere with one of his drivers. This gave him the added control of knowing where she was a lot of the time, and his security could report back to him what she was doing and who she was with.

Depp consistently portrayed himself as the victim, denying any responsibility for causing harm while attributing his issues to Heard. This pattern involved denying any wrongdoing, launching personal attacks against Heard, and shifting the blame onto her. Depp's strategy of playing the victim allowed him to deflect accountability and maintain control over the narrative. By denying his actions and presenting himself as the one being wronged, he attempted to invalidate Heard's claims and cast doubt on her credibility. This tactic often aims to manipulate public perception and create doubt about the true dynamics of the relationship. Depp also employed these tactics during trial.

DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a psychological defense mechanism often used by individuals, particularly in situations where they are being held accountable for their behavior.

DARVO typically involves three steps:

1. Deny: The person first denies any wrongdoing or responsibility for their actions. They may refuse to acknowledge their behavior or claim that it did not happen as described.

2. Attack: Next, the person may attack the credibility or character of the person who is confronting them. They might deflect blame by criticizing the other person's motives, actions, or behavior instead.

3. Reverse Victim and Offender: In this stage, the person reverses the roles, portraying themselves as the victim and the accuser as the offender. They might claim that they are the ones being unjustly treated or misunderstood, effectively flipping the situation.

DARVO is often employed in situations where there is a power imbalance or when someone wants to avoid accountability. It can be an effective manipulation tactic to evade responsibility and maintain control over a situation. However, it can also contribute to gaslighting and emotional abuse by invalidating the experiences and concerns of the genuine victim.

ADAM WALDMAN

Shortly after the divorce Depp hired Adam Waldman, who was the subject of Amber's defamation counter claim, to be his attorney. For years he's been coordinating an online smear campaign against Amber to ruin her career and shield Depp from violating the divorce NDA and risks of defamation. The biggest attacks against Amber came in the form of bot accounts and planted news articles. Amber testified that Waldman actually threw a newspaper at her with one of these articles.

Adam Waldman is the agent to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska* who has ties to the Russian election interference in 2016. Many of the bot accounts posted with Cyrillic characters, indicating Russian origin. We know from the election interference that Russia has the ability and reach to pull off a disinformation attack like this. The accounts pushing Amber hate and statements from Waldman often shouted him out in their tweets despite him being a relatively unknown attorney. One went as far as saying "I love you waldman!" This was obviously meant to rub in Amber's face that he was responsible for trying to ruin her.

A woman named Catherine Armecin, who previously had very little publishing presence beforehand, wrote over 30 negative articles about Amber in February of 2020. These articles, and others, were then amplified by these bots. The agency which these articles were published, International Business Times, has been criticized for being operated as a content farm. Change.org petitions were created to get her removed from her L'Oreal contract and from Aquaman. We know from emails that Depp specifically reached out to try and get her removed from the movie. There's also evidence to suggest that the majority of the signatures on the Aquaman petition were bot signatures.

WITNESS INTIMIDATION

Waldman was kicked off** the VA case for leaking confidential information after multiple violations of an order from the court telling him to stop. He leaked a declaration from Jennifer Howell that was never actually produced to Amber's attorneys. In it was information that Howell wouldn't have been allowed to testify to due to rules of evidence, so leaking it online was a good way to get this fake declaration to the public. He was banned for life from Twitter over his actions until Elon took over Twitter and lifted the bans of many accounts.

He took a briefcase of "documents" to the LAPD then told everyone she was under investigation for perjury. As an attorney he knows full well the police wouldn't handle accusations of perjury. This was just another move to paint Amber as a liar before she ever stepped foot in that courtroom. Watch his testimony***

He has also been accused of intimidating several witnesses with threats of being arrested or needing to produce large amounts of money to defend themselves in court. He pressured Laura Divenere to sign a declaration he drafted stating she never saw bruises on Amber and he sent her a text**** asking if she wanted to stay on the side of the "hoax". Amber suspected this was the case and secretly recorded a conversation where Laura apologized and says she was pressured into it. She later testified that Waldman threatened her with negative consequences if she didn't sign. Waldman was also reprimanded by the UK High Court judge over a tweet in which he addressed Divenere's testimony with "In Memorium".

At the VA trial, Waldman testified that he leaked information to three Youtubers who regularly attacked Amber and have been doing so for years. ThatUmbrellaGuy has posted over a thousand videos attacking Amber. His channel is monetized which means he has a large financial motive to continue doing so. ThatBrianFella is the only one with the full video of Amber's divorce deposition as well as other recordings between Amber and Johnny. He's uploaded these to his channel and has even added fake captions over certain conversations to give the appearance Amber was saying things she didn't. He's also cut and pasted audios together to completely change the context of these conversations. The last account specifically named was TheRealLauraB, who consistently posts negative content about Amber and has been facing her own legal consequences after she attempted to out a Twitter user as paid PR which led to an innocent woman being doxxed and the Twitter account deactivating.

In response to an op-ed written by Amber Heard, Johnny Depp filed a lawsuit against her, despite never being named or her detailing any specific incidents of domestic violence. In fact the only thing she said that even alluded to him was that "two years ago I became the face of domestic violence." This is factually accurate, as their entire marriage and divorce battle was extensively covered by the media. They also released a joint statement that said neither made any false allegations for financial gain. The op-ed aimed to bring attention to the issue of men in Hollywood being protected from consequences by their power and influence. Even if one were to doubt the validity of Amber Heard's allegations in 2016, everything she wrote in the piece was either factual or her own opinion. The fact that Depp was able to sue her for $50 million to silence her and take away her freedom of speech raises concerns about power dynamics and supports the overall message of the op-ed.

Typically, when filing a lawsuit against someone, you need to do so in the forum that is most convenient and appropriate for both parties. Most often, that would be the state where one or both parties reside. However, in the defamation trial in the US, Depp filed in Virginia, where neither he nor Amber had ever lived or worked. There's something called "libel tourism," where parties "forum shop" for a state with more lax laws regarding defamation. California has much stricter anti-SLAPP laws for defamation claims; therefore, Depp knew he would never succeed there. After Depp filed his lawsuit in VA in 2019, there was a push in the state to strengthen their anti-SLAPP laws, and his lawsuit was specifically cited as part of that push.

He argued that he should be able to file his suit in Virginia because the Washington Post, which published the op-ed, had computer servers in the state. This was another bizarre ruling from the judge, who accepted this argument despite the fact that WaPo has servers in other states and WaPo wasn't even part of the lawsuit. The issue with "forum non conveniens" is that it can present unfair advantages to the opposing party. In Virginia, for example, you're not able to subpoena a witness from out of state. This meant Amber wasn't able to compel witnesses to testify in Virginia. The majority of the time, she was forced to rely on prior video deposition testimony, which is shown to be less compelling to jurors than in-person testimony. It also left Amber unable to ask rebuttal questions or call back witnesses in instances where new information may come to light.

Virginia doesn't typically allow cameras inside the courtroom, especially in cases involving s3xual assault, which makes the judge's decision to televise the trial especially cruel. Despite Amber's petitions to exclude cameras from the trial, the judge declined due to the case being civil, rather than criminal. Even Amber's attempts at compromise, such as requesting camera exclusions on days where she recounted her s3xual assault, were denied. One section of Amber's testimony, where she recounted an incident of s3xual assault by Depp, later gained viral attention when a clip of her mentioning her dog stepping on a bee was circulated. The decision to televise the trial turned it into a spectacle, exacerbating the already disturbing nature of the case. People lined up for hours for the opportunity to get inside the court room. During one day of the trial, two Depp supporters were removed from the courtroom by armed guards after old tweets threatening Amber's life were discovered on their accounts.

Amber had to pass throngs of people dressed as pirates or in p00p costumes (1), shouting obscenities, booing (2), and waving hateful signs while Depp came and went like he was leaving a rock concert (3). Amber's most traumatic testimonies were turned into memes, while Depp was cheered online for mocking and antagonizing her attorney. Everything she did was scrutinized, while Depp was celebrated for drawing pictures and eating candy in the courtroom. She was accused of snorting c0caine from a tissue, while he was applauded for mocking the term "mega pint." The phrase was taken from Depp's own words in the UK trial and then used to mock Amber's attorney due to its absurdity. Merchandise from the trial flooded the internet, with T-shirts featuring Depp as Jack Sparrow with the phrases "mega pint" or "hearsay," next to shirts of Amber's face in unflattering poses with the phrases "t*rd" or "my dog stepped on a bee" on them. A s3x toy company even went as far as creating a product in the shape of a Maker's Mark whiskey bottle, which was the presumed object that Depp was accused of using to s3xually assault her. These items and others contributed to a disturbing trend of profiting off of the pain and trauma of real people involved in the trial.

It wasn't just Johnny Depp fans and bot accounts fueling the hatred towards Amber. Celebrities and several well-known product brands, such as Milani Cosmetics and Duolingo, joined in on the public shaming. One pervasive rumor used to discredit her was born from a TikTok created by Milani Cosmetics after Amber's attorney used one of their makeup palettes as a prop during opening statements. A popular TikTok sound called "International Super Spy" was played over a video of the cosmetic brand "investigating" and "proving" the palette was made after the divorce, even though neither Amber nor her attorney claimed it was the same palette. The internet seized upon that video and spread the rumor. There was even video of a fan walking into the courthouse to find Depp's lawyers and give them this "revelatory" information. Naturally they did nothing with it because they understood it was only a prop but that didn't stop the lie from catching fire and being repeated almost a year later. Milani Cosmetics has yet to apologize for inserting themselves into a case about domestic violence and s3xual assault.

The entire internet was bombarded with anti-Amber and pro-Depp content. Lawtubers (4), Twitch streamers (5), TikTok creators (6), and pseudo science body language "experts" (7) seized the opportunity to use the trial and the pro-Depp sentiment to increase viewership and, in turn, their own profits. Some made over $80,000 a month (8) from views and YouTube tip jars as they streamed the trial every day on their channels and offered commentary. The more cruel they were towards Amber, the more engagement they received. Anyone supporting Amber on any platform was harassed and silenced. Even Amber's expert witnesses were subjected to horrific online harassment. Several of them had their professional practices review-bombed by rabid Johnny Depp fans while they were still testifying on the stand.

Despite overwhelming evidence that dated back years, the relentless online assault no doubt played a significant role in Amber losing the case. Jurors were instructed to stay off social media for 6 weeks, yet the trial was relentlessly promoted and shared on every platform, inundating viewers with the details of the case and turning it into a pervasive topic of discussion. After the trial ended, one of the jurors anonymously called in to "Good Morning America" to justify their verdict. Two things he said were particularly noteworthy. During testimony, Amber was ripped apart online for "looking at the jury too often" and having "crocodile tears". The juror used both those phrases in his statement to "Good Morning America". Witnesses are often instructed to address the jury when testifying, since they are the ones who are determining the outcome. This was clearly weaponized against her to further demean and discredit her as a witness.

The juror also made a perplexing statement, claiming that "If she didn't do any of this stuff with the op-eds, Johnny Depp could have helped her out in her career." The fact that the juror could come to the conclusion that Amber and Johnny ended their relationship on good terms, despite weeks of testimony detailing allegations of abuse and irrefutable proof that Depp attempted to get her fired in 2016 is baffling. Furthermore, the statement implies that the negative consequences Heard faced to her career and personal safety are her own fault for speaking out. It also means they ignored the overwhelming evidence presented during the trial of Depp launching an online smear campaign against her.

Several people from inside the courtroom, including the court reporter, said that jurors were falling asleep during testimony. One juror was apparently experiencing some type of mental health issue when it was reported to the judge that he was talking to himself in an elevator and another was allowed to remain on the case even after admitting that his wife had texted him saying "Amber is psychotic". Journalist Nick Wallis covered both trials in person and just released a book on his experience. In it he details how someone who he was working with saw a juror walking out of the jury room. The juror was on the phone talking to someone and said "I can't believe people thought that!" and she was seen with a web page open on her phone and the headline of the page said Amber H. This individual reported what she saw to the court and a report was taken but the juror wasn't removed and remained through the verdict despite express instructions to remain off social media and to not research the case.

These details, along with many other bizarre occurrences, only further stacked the deck against Amber and highlighted the absurdity of the entire trial. The damage this trial has done to victims is immeasurable. Defamation suits noticeably increased in its wake and women online were being called Amber 2.0.

Amber had more evidence than most victims to support her claims of abuse, but unfortunately, a significant portion of it was excluded from the trial. However, two months after the verdict, thousands of pages of previously sealed documents were released. These documents included notes from several therapists spanning several years, which corroborated Amber's claim that she had been a victim of abuse for a long time.

The documents also showed that Johnny Depp's legal team selectively played only certain parts of the audio recordings during the trial and that his attorney Camille Vasquez requested the judge not allow the jurors to hear them in their entirety during jury deliberation. The unsealed documents contained full transcripts of some of these recordings, providing a more comprehensive picture of the situation and revealing the manipulative nature of Depp's legal team and their tactics to undermine Amber Heard's credibility. The reason they were able to transcribe the full conversation despite the fact that Depp didn't turn over the complete recording was because Adam Waldman leaked them online to the Daily Mail and ThatBrianFella. Unfortunately Judge Azcarate refused to allow Amber's team to present the transcripts because they were transcribed from the leaked recording and not the original file.

Yet another crucial piece of evidence excluded were text messages sent by Johnny's assistant, Stephen Deuters. These messages were sent after an incident on a flight from Boston to LA, where a drunk and high Johnny kicked Amber in the back, knocking her to the floor. In the texts, Deuters tells Amber "when I told him he kicked you he cried." Amber counters that this wasn't the first time something like this had happened, listing several other trips where similar incidents occurred, which Deuters acknowledges. Judge Azcarate excluded these text messages, despite the fact that Deuters admitted to sending them during his testimony in the UK trial, because the originals weren't produced.

Although Johnny's declining reputation wasn't entirely excluded from the trial, it was downplayed by his lawyers and by the judges pre-trial rulings on what evidence to allow. To succeed in his lawsuit, he needed to prove that her op-ed caused him damages. However, this argument is undermined by the fact that he had already sued The Sun for damaging his career months before the op-ed was published and Judge Azcarate prevented Amber's team from informing the jury that Depp lost in the UK. The jury was allowed to hear the headline of an article about Johnny being fired from Fantastic Beasts, but Amber's team was not permitted to mention that he only lost the role because of the verdict in the UK, which found him responsible for 12 out of 14 incidents of abuse. This created the impression that Amber's accusations alone were responsible for Johnny's declining career.

Tracey Jacobs, Johnny Depp's former agent, was a witness who could testify to the fact that Depp's career had been declining for years prior to his relationship with Amber Heard due to his substance abuse and poor behavior. Amber's legal team requested a transcript of Jacobs' deposition from a different lawsuit in order to prepare their defense, but Depp's lawyers intentionally waited until the day of the new deposition to provide it. After the deposition had already begun, Depp's office emailed the old deposition to the wrong paralegal in a password-protected file that she did not have access to. It was also unmarked and buried among other files. This was clearly done intentionally to prevent Amber from building a proper defense against Depp's claims that her accusations damaged his career and reputation.

MURDER ACCUSATION

During the trial there was a rumor floating around claiming Amber had murdered her best friend in a car accident. It was one of many unsubstantiated claims used to paint her as an awful person to the public. When the unsealed docs were released they showed that it was actually Depp's team who had brought up this claim with zero evidence or cause for thinking it. Amber had nothing to do with the car accident that k*lled her best friend in high school yet they grilled Amber's sister Whitney during her deposition trying to make a case for it. This was a particularly evil tactic and considering this information was in a sealed deposition we can make an educated guess as to where the rumor started online.

Among the unsealed documents was a letter from Amber's divorce attorney commending her for being true to her word that she wasn't after Depp's money. The letter debunked the narrative that Amber was merely a gold digger out for his wealth, as it revealed she turned down her right to half the profits he made during the year they were married. Depp filmed Pirates of the Caribbean 5 during that year, and under California law, she was entitled to half of the earnings from that film regardless of any other circumstances, such as accusations of abuse. A forensic accountant for Amber's attorney estimated that she was potentially turning down over $20 million dollars by declining this right.

Instead, Amber settled for $7 million, and she pledged all of it to charity. The judge excluded the letter, stating that the issue of the divorce wasn't relevant. The judge did however allow the issue of Amber not donating the full $7 million which came from the divorce to be scrutinized, despite the fact that she had been paying in installments up until Depp sued her in 2019. Depp knew this, as his attorney sent a check from his account on Amber's behalf on the day the divorce was finalized. Amber was even ahead of the outlined payment schedule.

After the lawsuit in the UK, in which Amber was a witness, and the lawsuit against her specifically in Virginia, she put the payments on hold because of the legal expenses she was incurring at that time. (10) This is patently false. The discovery phase of the UK and US trials were happening at the same time. Depp's attorneys in the UK had access to discovery in the US case. The rumor that Amber wasn't subject to discovery in the UK is laughable in that no witness would be allowed to testify before being vetted and remember his attorneys had access to the Virginia discovery. Amber's pictures and files were used in the UK trial so Depp's request for her to produce them in the US trial was redundant and served largely to force her to needlessly expend more costs. Neither side is going to turn over their physical devices to the opposite side so exchanging media required hiring experts to pull and analyze the information. Most people also don't have every single physical device from the last 10 years. Depp's team continuously stalled on starting and then finishing the process of exchanging media with Amber's team. Then shortly before the trial Depp's attorney filed a motion for sanctions claiming Amber's side had intentionally given them too much data to wade through without enough time to go through and as a result wanted the judge to either exclude her pictures entirely or to allow them to tell the jury that their authenticity couldn't be verified. Depp had so little evidence that his team strategy was to instead exclude or invalidate hers.

ABUSE AS ENTERTAINMENT

For years, the online hate against Amber was unrelenting, but something shifted during the start of the Virginia trial. Even without the excluded evidence, what was allowed at trial showed to anyone who paid attention that he was a violent and vindictive person who isn't worthy of praise and adoration. It wasn't enough to make people hate her; they needed to try and make Depp likable.

During the Virginia trial, bots and opportunistic accounts started to crop up, continuing the push of negative Amber content as well as new pro-Depp content. Websites like Law and Crime, who streamed the trial and likely profited from it, created top 10 lists of Depp's "best comebacks and reactions" during testimony. They were framed as being funny and charming, except when viewed in a larger context, showed Depp's disrespect and contempt towards being questioned under oath. He couldn't keep himself from getting angry and making jabs at Amber's attorney. Behavior that would, in any other circumstance, be admonished was now celebrated.

Outside the courthouse, you had fans dressed as p00p emojis and pirates. Hundreds of people lined the streets for blocks with posters professing their love for Depp or their hatred of Amber. People actually brought live alpacas to the courthouse as a nod to Depp saying he'd never return to the Pirates franchise even for 300 million dollars and a million alpacas. Depp's attorneys even took pictures and signed autographs like this was a major league sporting event and not a trial detailing severe abuse allegations.

Snippets of every witness's testimony were cut into out-of-context clips with sensationalized titles and clickbait thumbnails every single day in real-time to push the narrative that Depp and his team were crushing Amber and that every one of her witnesses was being caught in lie after lie.

Tiktoks about the trial exploded. Tiktok feeds their users' content based on their own unique algorithm, so what one person sees, another won't, yet during the trial, the same content was being pushed to everyone. Regardless of your typical feed and despite telling whatever platform you were on that you weren't interested, the content didn't stop. It was enough to make some people suspicious, but the general public ran with the "fun" and completely lost sight of the fact that even if you believed Depp was the victim, you were still laughing and making a joke of serious abuse.

You had people dressing themselves and their children as pirates. You had adults acting out Amber's testimony describing assaults she suffered at the hands of Depp. You had women making Tiktoks over the sound of Amber's s3xual assault testimony, asking what Johnny Depp did wrong, or pretending to be turned on by the description of r@pe. Parents would enlist their children in acting out descriptions of the physical violence.

It wasn't just Youtube personalities and Twitch streamers trying to cash in. Restaurants, such as Starbucks, had employees putting out two different tip jars. One with Amber's picture and one with Depp's, to see who people thought was the "winner" and generate more tips. Etsy shops started producing pro-Depp or anti-Amber merchandise. One person made a picture of Depp dressed as his Alice In Wonderland character holding Amber's severed head. A s3x toy company made a dildo in the shape of the alcohol bottle Depp is accused of r@ping her with. An app creator made an app called "Hurds T*rds." He attempted to market it and when he received pushback denied that his blonde character that p00ps in beds wasn't aimed at Amber. New tattoos of Depp's likeness started cropping up. Some even got tattoos in honor of his attorney Camille Vasquez.

Tubi, a streaming platform, made a movie about the trial only months after it ended. Keeping with the pro-Depp narrative, they hired actors who were more similar in age to erase the fact that Depp was twice Amber's age. The male lead even looked younger than the character playing Amber. SNL dedicated a skit to the trial, mocking Amber. Domestic violence was turned into online entertainment.
