Would Charlie Chan at all as rebooted detective show? Could it be done as a positive representation of an Asian American/Pacific Islander? Or is the character forever tainted as an offensive stereotype?
I'm not very expert about Charlie Chan, but since what I know I think his characterization, despite being stereotypical, is a pretty positive representation of an Asian American private eye. I think his modern counterpart could be a kind of Asian Poirot.
im VERY late to this discussion but as an asian person i dont see the character of charlie chan as a racist trope, in fact the character was originally conceived to be a counter to the "yellow peril" characters of the time like fu manchu. as long as charlie is played by an actual asian person and is portrayed as a competent detective, i would welcome a charlie chan reboot
