Star Wars: Episode IX Opens On Top. Cats Crashes Down. Weekend Box Office- December 20-22, 2019

Something, something dark side.

Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker opened at #1 as expected with $176 million making it the lowest opening weekend of the new trilogy. The Force Awakens made $248 million in 2015 and The Last Jedi grossed $220 million in 2017. This could speak to how some fans received The Last Jedi or what they think of Disney's Star Wars movies in general. The movie made $374 million worldwide which is low for what was the last movie in The Skywalker Saga.

Cats opened with bad reviews and undone visual effects and only could make $6.5 million. The movie cost $95 million and looks to be on its way to losing money. Jumanji: The Next Level has a big second weekend with $26.1 million.

Post Christmas update: Star Wars: Episode IX had the second best Christmas Day ever with $32 million.
